SUP Events in Alberta June 6, 2016 14:43 ~ Tatum Taylor
Glacier-fed lakes, chinook winds and . . . .paddleboarding?! Here in Alberta, we see all kinds of weather conditions at any time of year. A regular spring day could see snow, wind gusts and a 20 degree temperature change all within a few hours! When I first moved from Ontario, I didn’t fully understand, until a friend and I spent a whole summer living in the mountains and searching in vain for warm enough water to swim in!
So needless to say, SUP in Alberta has been a bit slower than other parts of Canada in spreading in popularity. It has definitely taken hold more in the past few years, but SUPers in Alberta come armed with wetsuits and booties now so we can get out on the water sooner! Once the “warm” weather hits, the busy SUP season heats up in Alberta. Here is a list of some events you will find the Alberta Suplove ambassadors at this year!
May and June 2016
Banff Yoga Festival (SUP Yoga)
River SUP1 Course on the Bow River in Calgary
Blue Water/Green Earth, Mahogany Lake, Calgary
MEC Paddlefest Calgary at Chestermere Lake (Suplove is running the sessions for the second year now!)
Ladies’ River SUP Day in Canmore
July and August 2016
Canmore SUP CUP Race
Rednik Rippin’ the Bow, Calgary
SUP Yoga weekly sessions with Supta Yoga, Mahogany Lake
2nd Annual Mahogany SUP CUP Race
Alberta SUP enthusiasts can also join the Facebook page “YYC SUP Crew” started by ambassador Robyn Bell. This is a group to share where/when we are going paddling in and around the Calgary area, and to organize group paddles together during the season. Last year we also got out for SUP’n under the Stars during a full moon! You can also catch Tatum in Ontario over the summer months to meet up for sessions on Lake Huron, Windmill Lake Park in Bayfield and Cypress Lake, Bruce National Park. Contact for more details!
